Return of the Hero

It is 1809, and the dashing Captain Neuville (Jean Dujardin) is set to marry Pauline (Noémie Merlant) until he is summoned to war in Austria. When he fails to return home and Pauline falls ill, her sister Elizabeth (Mélanie Laurent) feigns letters from the Captain which tells of his bravery and, finally, his heroic death on the battlefield.

But when Neuville unexpectedly returns after three years—not a hero but a drunken deserter—Elizabeth tells him of her plot to keep him away from her family. But when he ignores her advice, she finds herself fighting to maintain her deception against his opportunistic advances.
