Proving that Black Panther doesn’t have the monopoly on epic African tales, The Woman King stars Viola Davis as the veteran leader of a band of elite female fighters. A real-life story of defiance, it shows the kingdom of Dahomey (lead by John Boyega) as it faces threats from rival kingdoms and colonists. New recruit Nawi (Thuso Mbedu) must learn discipline and grit under the wings of generals Izogie (No Time to Die’s Lashana Lynch) and Amenza (Sheila Atim).

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood – known for her romantic dramas like Love & Basketball and now action spectaculars like Netflix’s The Old Guard – there’s an electricity to the battle scenes, and a specificity to the production design that makes it far more than ‘West Africa’s Braveheart’. Viola Davis shows a rare strength and authority in the lead role.
