Small Things Like These

Kiln Cinema is pleased to be hosting a preview of Small Things Like These on Friday 25th October, ahead of the film’s release on Friday 1 November.

Following The Quiet Girl, this second adaptation of the work of Irish author Claire Keegan stars Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) in typically magnetic form as coal man Bill Furlong in 1980s County Wexford. Father to five and gentle despite what life has offered him, he sees more than he cares to as he delivers fuel across the community. When he finds Sarah shivering in a convent coal shed, it unlocks bitter truths about the town, despite the reassurances of abbess Sister Mary (Emily Watson).

Adapted by playwright Enda Walsh (Disco Pigs, Hunger) and co-starring Eileen Walsh – who lead Kiln’s production of Girl on an Altar in 2022 – this is full of evocative details of life in Ireland in the 1980s, but spurns nostalgia to tell of both the best and worst that humans are capable of.
