“A startling portrait of intimacy” ★★★★★ The Guardian
Juliette Binoche, Tom Courtenay and Anna Calder-Marshall star in this profoundly moving London-set drama. Amanda (Binoche) travels to London following a divorce to be close to her mother (Calder-Marshall), but when she discovers her step-father (Courtenay) having sex with her mother, she involves the police. Suffering with dementia, Amanda believes her mother can no longer informed consent. The truth is much murkier than the law can allow, but not before a world of family secrets are spilled.
Undoubtedly heartbreaking, Queen at Sea justifies itself through its clarity of vision and emotional honesty, as well as its moral ambiguity. Like Michael Hank’s Amour before it, this is a towering achievement from long-absent director Lance Hammer, a critical darling on its premiere at the Berlin Film Festival.
