Documentary Coup 53 tells the tale of the US and UK’s move to unseat Iran’s leader Mohammad Mosaddegh in 1953. Having nationalised the country’s oil interests, the imperial powers sought to install the decadent puppet, the Shah of Iran. Coup 53 – through reconstructions featuring Ralph Fiennes as MI6 agent Norman Derbyshire – shows how far Britain was willing to go to lead this international interference.

An important chapter in world history too little known in the UK, Coup 53 could not be more relevant as Iran once again becomes a flashpoint in international warfare. Edited and co-written by legendary editor Walter Murch – whose contributions to Apocalypse Now, The Godfather, The English Patient and Ghost make him one of the greats of cinema – this is a revelatory story, grippingly told by director Taghi Amirani.
