Renée Zellweger returns for this adaptation of Helen Fielding’s novel of the life of hapless, once-eternally-single Bridget Jones. As the film begins, what felt like happily ever after with Mark Darcy (Colin Firth) has faded, and as a widowed mother of two, love feels like a distant concept.
Bus-like, three men appear to bedevil her at once: Mr Wallaker (Chiwitel Ejiofor), a teacher at her children’s school; Roxster (One Day and The White Lotus’s Leo Woodall), a bewitching 29-year-old; and old flame Daniel Cleaver (Hugh Grant). Setting them to rights are Bridget’s cadre of friends and familiars, with Emma Thompson, Sally Phillips, Gemma Jones, Jim Broadbent all reprising their roles. Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy is British rom-com’s ‘we are so back’ moment: an unashamed treat that is as satisfying as the series has ever been.
