Based on the 2005 Booker-shortlisted novel by Kazuo Ishiguro.

Narrator, Kathy H (Mulligan), her headstrong, volatile friend Ruth (Knightley) and the sweet-natured, emotional Tommy (Garfield) spend their childhood at a seemingly idyllic English boarding school, set in a strange, alternative, England, full of bizarre medical technology and ominous laws concerned with preserving health and banishing sickness.

It is only when the three friends are 11 years old that they accidentally learn the sinister truth about what their elite boarding school and the Sovietised state has in store for them. As the trio grow into young adults, they find that they have to come to terms with the strength of the love they feel for each other, while preparing themselves for the haunting reality that awaits them.
