Sofia Coppola – director of Marie Antoinette, The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation – shows us the life of Priscilla Presley (newcomer Cailee Spaeney), as she is captivated by GI – and worldwide superstar – Elvis (Jacob Elordi). Despite being in a position every fan dreams of, her life in Graceland is far from a wish fulfilled, taken from her parents and installed like a princess in a tower.
Many biopics focused on men struggle to integrate the story of their wives, yet Priscilla deeply reckons with its subject, her sacrifices and her joys. Coppola does not shy away from the strangeness of Priscilla’s life, subjugated to Elvis’s whims. Sumptuous and evocative, Coppola’s film manages to both create its own unique image, while also tearing down the iconography of The King.
