Verdi's La Traviata
Mon 22 Jun 2015 – Sat 4 Jul 2015
Presented by OperaUpClose & Belgrade Theatre Coventry
In an orchestration by Harry Blake and English version by Robin Norton-Hale
★★★★‘As much emotional truth as in any production I have seen’
Olivier Award-winning company OperaUpClose and director/translator Robin Norton-Hale bring their critically acclaimed English version of La Traviata to the Tricycle Theatre.
The story of Violetta, a so-called ‘fallen woman’ who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future, this production is set in the 1920s underworld of speakeasies and bootlegging and reveals the hypocrisy and heartache behind the glittering façade of parties.
With Verdi’s much-loved melodies orchestrated for a trio of clarinet, cello and piano by composer Harry Blake, this La Traviata will serenade you, seduce you, and break your heart.
Creatives include Elspeth Wilkes (Musical Director), Katie Bellman (Designer) and Andrew May (Lighting Designer).

OperaUpClose was founded at the Cock Tavern Theatre in Kilburn in 2009, for the experiment of producing La boheme in a tiny room above a pub. That production went on to win an Olivier Award for Best Opera and a WhatsOnStage Award for Best Off-West End Production. Since then OUC has produced 20 opera productions at the King’s Head Theatre, Soho Theatre and venues all over the country. OperaUpClose has developed a reputation for intimate, surprising stagings which demand detailed, truthful acting from the singers without compromising on musical standards, with razor-sharp new English translations and inventive orchestrations. All of this helps achieve OUC’s mission of making opera more democratic, and of showing just what an exciting, theatrical, accessible artform it can be.
