“A fitting goodbye to cinema’s favourite grave-robber” ★★★★ Empire
Harrison Ford dons the whip and fedora once again in one last outing for the series that is the cinematic high watermark for adventure films. This fifth telling of the quests of Indiana Jones sees him teaming up with his goddaughter (Phoebe Waller-Bridge in quip-tastic form) to find the other half of an ancient – and apocalyptically powerful – dial, before it can be paired with the half in the hands of Nazi scientist Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen).
Taking the directing reins from Steven Spielberg is James Mangold, whose Logan and Ford vs Ferrari pitted down-but-not-out men against a world unsure of their purpose. Debuting at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, if this is the last we’ll see of Ford, it’s a fast-paced, globe-trotting, fittingly lived-in final chapter for the world’s hottest archaeologist.
