In this hilarious, sardonic satire Thelonious ‘Monk’ Ellison (Jeffrey Wright) has the weight of America on his back. His family are driving him crazy, his love life is non-existent and his writing career is foundering, unable to write a ‘black enough’ book. As he returns to his family home, Monk throws out a rebuke to his agent in the form of My Pafology, a gross satire on the type of black book white America wants to read. But Monk’s chaotic ride is just starting when the book attracts major publishing interest…

A sophisticated take on modern race politics – and how they play out in our actual lives – as well as a showcase for the terrific talents of its cast, American Fiction adapts Percival Everett’s superb novel Erasure in fine form. Issa Rae (Barbie, Insecure), Sterling K. Brown (Waves) and Tracee Ellis Ross (Black-ish) bring depth to Monk’s family life, but Jeffrey Wright – finally in a leading role – is reason enough to discover this comedic gem.
