Freud's Last Session

  • Directed by Matt Brown
  • Starring Anthony Hopkins, Matthew Goode and Liv Lisa Fries
  • 108 mins

Sigmund Freud, stricken with terminal throat cancer, approaches a stranger, hoping to understand the psychology of a man who truly believes. Enter Oxford theologian C.S. Lewis who – on the verge of World War II – is tasked with sparring with atheist Freud. Across an electrifying series of intellectual duels, we understand how the men’s lives have shaped their thinking (and where their polarities begin to meet).

Based on Mark St Germain’s play but given cinematic breath in this adaptation by Matt Brown, Anna Freud (Liv Lisa Fries), pioneering child psychologist acts as a foil to both men. Unashamedly a film of grand ideas, Freud’s Last Session is brought to life by two crackling performances from Matthew Goode and Anthony Hopkins, the latter on a superb run following One Life and The Father.
