Adapted from Elizabeth Fremantle’s best-selling historical novel Queen’s Gambit, Firebrand sees Catherine Parr, the sixth of Henry VIII’s wives, fight to be the one that survived. Boasting appropriately incendiary performances from Jude Law and Alicia Vikander, Karïm Ainouz (the Brazilian director behind the beloved The Invisible Life of Eurídice Gusmão) brings a fresh, decidedly feminist angle to the familiar Tudor romance narrative.

In the waning days of King Henry VIII’s reign, courtly conspirators on all sides close ranks around the increasingly paranoid king to ensure their power is maintained, while the free-thinking, scholarly Katharine Parr forms allegiances with the women of the court to find a way to a more just, tolerant society. The lavish, highly-detailed production design is captured  by cinematographer Hélène Louvart(La Chimera) in this thrilling, urgent restaging of English history that begs to be seen on the big screen.
