A joyous portrait of the power of love in difficult times, My Favourite Cake was a critical favourite at this year’s Berlin Film Festival. Set in modern Iran, we follow seventy-year-old Mahin (Lily Farhadpour). After the loss of her husband and daughter, Mahin’s days are repetitious, despite her spirited character. She is ready to push back against the strict authorities and old enough to remember a time when the hijab was not mandatory in Tehran’s streets. A spark flies when she meets cab driver Faramarz (Esmail Mehrabi), another soul seeking connection.

Poignant, intimate and beautifully observed, My Favourite Cake is a quiet affront to the Iranian regime (who arrested its filmmakers during production). Testament to those moments when the distance between people shortens – as well as what keeps us apart – it is a heartwarming tale of later love.
