Visionary architect László Toth (Adrien Brody) flees the ashes of post-war Europe to find a new outlet for his dreams. Arriving in Pennsylvania, he quickly finds himself drawn into the net of industrialist Harrison Lee Van Buren (Guy Pearce), who commissions from him a major new building. To secure his wife’s (Felicity Jones) place in the United States, he is obliged to begin a delicate dance with the magnate, one that sees him reckon with a new world order.
Critics have agreed that The Brutalist is as monumental as one of its protagonist’s edifices, but audiences should not fear its epic runtime (not least because there is an interval!). Brady Corbet’s third feature announces a major director working with the raw materials of history – of post-war Jewish experience, of assimilation, of the creative spirit of the twentieth century – to create something singular and soaring, not just a major awards contender but also a significant cinematic experience you won’t want to miss on the big screen.
