A riveting psychological #MeToo drama set in the high-stakes world of young tennis wannabes, Julie Keeps Quiet is one of the year’s best debuts. Set in Belgium, we follow Julie (first time actor and tennis ace Tessa Van den Broeck) who maintains poise so that she can pursue her dreams of becoming a professional. Yet when her contemporary Aline takes her own life, questions swirl as to why their coach Jeremy is nowhere on the scene.
Viewers have found similarities with the films of the Dardenne Brothers (who act as co-producers here), but this is the work of a bold new voice with expert control over morally complex material with close attention to its characters.
