Dead of Winter

A tense thriller that makes the most of its stunning landscape and an entrancing central performance from Emma Thompson, Dead of Winter puts you out on the ice, alone. Widow Barb (Thompson) wants to scatter the ashes of her husband at an ice-fishing spot beloved by both of them. Taking a wrong turn, she happens on a remote house where strange noises echo and blood drips in the snow. Not buying its owner’s story that it’s deer hunting season, she starts to uncover strange family goings on that will push her beyond her limits.

Gritty and compelling, but with plenty of characterful specificity, this is a trip deep into Minnesota’s Fargo-esque country. Thompson (sporting a very convincing US accent) has never been better as the down-but-not-out solo traveller who must fight not only the elements, but horrors made by men in a chiller that will hold you on the edge of your seat.
