Blue Moon

  • Directed by Richard Linklater
  • Starring Ethan Hawke, Margaret Qualley, Bobby Cannavale and Andrew Scott
  • 100 mins

From the director of Boyhood and Dazed & Confused comes this brilliant theatreland historical drama. It’s the opening night of Oklahoma! in 1943 and Broadway is buzzing. Except for the Manhattan bar where Lorenz Hart – genius composer of ‘The Lady and the Tramp’, ‘My Funny Valentine’ and ‘Blue Moon’ – is holding court. For Hart (Ethan Hawke) has been nudged out of this new smash with his former collaborator Richard Rodgers, and is spending the night regaling the bar with wit as sparkling as it is acid.

Director Richard Linklater’s talent is for telling stories with a unique eye for the power of time. Across a single night, we can see the full sweep of Hart’s life, his loves (Margaret Qualley), his collaborators (Andrew Scott) and his enemies. Supremely poignant, beautifully acted and with a lightness of touch with history rare in period drama, Blue Moon deserves multiple curtain calls.
