1952: Marty Mauser (Timothée Chalamet) is dreaming big, while holding a small bat. He wants not only to become the world table tennis champion, but also make the sport a worldwide spectacle. Travelling to Britain for a showdown against the Japanese champion, he sweet talks his way into a room at the Ritz and into the orbit of film star Kay Stone (Gwyneth Paltrow, returning to the big screen). But can he rise to the top, or it all just topspin?
Director Josh Safdie goes solo for this screwball sports flick, following up the boiled tensions of Good Time and Uncut Gems. Timothée Chalamet – seemingly incapable of letting one awards season pass without a worthy addition to his filmography – is the whirlwind around which the world of this film revolves, tearing up the green boards. Throwing everything at the wall with dizzying, hilarious and cinematically ambitious abandon, this is a true delight, kicking off the year in fine form.
