Sound Design and Composition for Theatre

Join sound designer and composer Nicola T. Chang (For the Kiln: Shanghai Dolls, The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs; other: For Black Boys Who Have Considered Suicide When the Hue Gets Too Heavy, The Swell, A Playlist for the Revolution) for a hands-on Masterclass exploring the craft, complexity, and collaboration behind content-focused sound design and story-led composition for theatre.

Drawing on case studies from recent productions (including Shanghai Dolls and The Ministry of Lesbian Affairs at the Kiln), Nicola will take you inside her process — from the earliest conversations in the rehearsal room to the final moments in tech. She’ll unpack how she approaches a script, develops a show’s sonic identity, and makes choices that support rhythm, mood, and dramaturgy. This will be a hands-on workshop where you will get an opportunity to develop your own sound effects and soundscapes.

There will be time at the end for a Q&A with Nicola – please bring along any questions you may have!

This Masterclass is open and available to people with all levels of experience. You do not need any previous experience to participate.
