The Maladies

When Empowercast is bought by a major company podcasters Leonie, Tamara, Cleo and Izzy are delighted. But as they start to investigate why a group of women in London have mysteriously fallen silent, they get more than they bargained for, as the silence starts to infect their own friendship group. From women compulsively dancing in Strasbourg in 1518, to schoolgirls catching laughter in Tanzania in 1962, to cheerleaders uncontrollably twitching in 2011, The Maladies is about Mass Psychogenic Illness and how contagion is a form of resistance when people become powerless.’
The Maladies is performed by Kiln’s 16-18 Youth Theatre. Kiln’s Youth Theatre programmes are an opportunity for young people who live or learn in Brent, to develop confidence and creative skills. Through weekly sessions participants work with professional creatives, directors, and facilitators to explore various theatre processes. Youth Theatre sessions are a great way to connect with other young people through a shared love of drama.
