A Thousand and One

In this Sundance Film Festival prize winner, musician Teyana Taylor makes her mark as an actor, bringing rare depth to this story of a mother on the brink. Just released from prison, Inez (Taylor) is raw from the loss of her son into the foster system. When she spots Terry on the street, she is determined to take him into back into her own care. But this decision casts a long shadow, as we see him grow into a young man of promise, but with his options severely limited.

Spanning generations and showing how a neighbourhood changes, this debut from music video director AV Rockwell offers sensitivity to the realities of black lives in America, earning comparisons to Moonlight. With stunning cinematography, it’s a tale of mothers and sons and a changing portrait of Harlem.
