Black Bag

Steven Soderbergh, master creator of serious entertainment such as Out of Sight and the Ocean’s Eleven trilogy, returns to the world of intrigue that made his name in Black Bag. George (Michael Fassbender) and Kathryn (Cate Blanchett) are married and are co-workers. As it happens, their place of work is the Secret Intelligence Service and they are tasked by their boss (Pierce Brosnan) with discovering who has leaked to the Russians. They host a dinner party with the other key spies to flush out the mole, but what if their spouse is the real suspect?

Written by Hollywood heavyweight David Koepp (Jurassic Park, Mission: Impossible, Spider-Man), Black Bag manages to dangle the many threads here with precision and verve. Soderbergh’s talent is always on the unexpected approach to genre material, and a deft hand for deadpan comedy. Both are on display here, along with an absurd line up of acting talent.
