It’s 1877 and Empress Elisabeth of Austria is due to celebrate her fortieth birthday. Once idolised for her beauty, she finds difficulty accepting her new perceived identity as an ‘old woman’ and strikes a plan to maintain her public image. As ‘Sissi’ reflects on her future of strict ceremony and royal duties, Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread) gives an unmissable performance, depicting the Empress’s response to living in a society shaped by men, even when you are one of the most powerful women in the world.

Paying homage to the life of one of Austria’s most elusive historical figures, this period piece drama is heightened by director Maria Kreutzer’s cleverly embedded comic elements and dream-like sequences.
