John Ford - Dreaming the Quiet Man + Q&A
- Directed by Sé Merry Doyle
- 90 minutes
- Cert U
This screening of John Ford – Dreaming The Quiet Man will feature Lance Pettitt (author of Screening Ireland and The Last Bohemian, a brilliant new biography of Brian Desmond Hurst) in conversation with director Sé Merry Doyle.
Dreaming The Quiet Man (2009) explores legendary Hollywood filmmaker John Ford’s relationship with his ancestral homeland, attempts to found and support an Irish Film Industry and its crystallisation in one of his most breathtaking and controversial films.
The documentary will be screened following The Quiet Man (1952) which sees John Wayne’s American brawler Sean Thornton return to his birthplace in Connemara to encounter romance, Republicanism and one of the most talented ensemble casts ever assembled on screen (Maureen O’Hara, Barry Fitzgerald, Arthur Shields). The Quiet Man is a perennial classic rarely seen in London cinemas.
Dreaming The Quiet Man is a masterful documentary about one of the cinema’s greatest artists and his Irishness, narrated by Gabriel Byrne and featuring Martin Scorsese along with the last recorded interview with Maureen O’Hara.
This screening is presented in association with the Irish Film Institute’s IFI International Programme supported by Culture Ireland.
