Evil Does Not Exist

From Oscar-winning director Ryusuke Hamaguchi (Drive My Car), this emotionally complex and thoughtful eco-drama lets no one off the hook. Takumi (Hitoshi Omika) lives in a small town outside Tokyo, gathering pure water for a local noodle bar and looking after his daughter. When a developer buys up huge swathes of local land to build a ‘glamping’ site, the water supply is put at risk of sewage run off.

While this might seem like a tale of simple morality, Hamaguchi takes a bolder turn, showing the humanity of the developers and also the impenetrable choices offered to Takumi. Every bit as rich and inspired as Drive My Car, this is a fascinating, gentle but ultimately overwhelming work from the Japanese master.
