Mr Burton

How did Port Talbot miner’s son Richard Jenkins become world-renowned acting powerhouse (and notorious hellraiser) Richard Burton? This Welsh drama captures the moment of inspiration for young Richard (Industry’s Harry Lawtey), spurred on by his teacher Philip Burton (Toby Jones). Gripped by the world opened to him by Shakespeare, his teacher offers him the encouragement sorely lacking elsewhere.

The story centres on Burton’s breakthrough performance as Prince Hal in Henry IV, but it is the subtle turn of withdrawn schoolboy to acting legend that is so convincing here. With performances from Lesley Manville among others, this is also a great opportunity to show off the stunning Welsh landscapes that left an indelible mark on the actor’s imagination.
