★★★★ ‘Jodie Comer is a beacon of light’ Evening Standard

Written by Alice Birch (Succession, Lady Macbeth, Normal People) and directed by newcomer Mahalia Belo, Jodie Comer (Killing Eve) stars in this unsettlingly believable sci-fi tale of near-future disaster. Comer is a new mother who must flee her home after extreme flooding makes their home unliveable. Escaping to the north of England and forced to make impossible choices, the realities of motherhood in a disaster push her to her limits.

Commanding an increasingly central place in the spotlight following the West End triumph of Prima Facie, Jodie Comer brings complexity to this tale of post-apocalyptic survival. Usually the preserve of lone men, placing a new mother at the heart of this story makes for an original story with incredible stakes. Thoughtful, devastating and with a central performance of real weight, The End We Start From is one of the best debut films of the year.
