The Miracle Club

A delightful Irish comedy-drama The Miracle Club is backed by three Oscar-winning or nominated powerhouses in the shape of Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates and Laura Linney. The three leads play lifelong friends who live in a suburb of Dublin. Each needs a miracle of their own: Lily (Maggie Smith) is still mourning her son’s death; Dolly (Agnes O’Casey) has a son who cannot speak; and Eileen (Kathy Bates) suspects she may have breast cancer. Chrissie (Laura Linney) returns to town and no one knows why the older locals have  soured on her. Yet they’ll have to make amends when they find themselves winning a prize of a trip to Lourdes. 

Without lapsing into sentimentality, this is a heartwarming and honest script with a rare honesty about women’s lives. With a turn from Irish legend, Stephen Rea, this is a crowd pleaser with laughs to spare.
