“[A] powerful story of Welsh sisters in a world of their own.” ★★★★ The Guardian

Agnieszka Smoczyńska (The Lure) directs this phenomenally acted, disturbing true story about ‘silent twins’ June and Jennifer Gibbons, whose shared isolation results in their subjection to the criminal and mental-rehabilitation systems. With breath-taking performances from Letitia Wright (Black Panther, Avengers: Endgame) and Tamara Lawrance (On Chesil Beach) as the titular characters, The Silent Twins is a deeply moving story, rich in themes of sibling love, immigrant struggles and fear of the unknown, whilst the inclusion of rich fantasy like sequences and stop motion animations brilliantly submerge the audience into the peculiar world of the twins’ minds.

Growing up in Haverfordwest, Wales in the early 1970s, June and Jennifer experience first-hand the isolation and ‘otherness’ that came with being the children of Caribbean immigrant parents, receding into their own fantasy world. Choosing to only communicate with each other in their own autonomous language, the twins grow closer to each other whilst becoming further distanced from the world around them. Displeased with their unwillingness to interact with anyone else, they find themselves separated when they become institutionalised, but does their separation lead to more destruction, or now alone, can the twins finally find their voice?
