Paul Greengrass’s talents lie in taking real life scenarios and constructing gripping thrillers around them, without sacrificing the authentic dilemmas at their core. In films such as Captain Phillips and The Lost Bus, he followed ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. In his latest, which sets the clock back to 1381, Andrew Garfield is an English peasant who is utterly dispossessed. His wife and child lost in the plague, he is taxed to the hilt by Richard II (Woody Norman).

In a story as compelling as it is rousing, we see him lead the people in a righteous battle against tyranny. With a stacked cast – Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander and Thomas McKenzie to name a few – this is equal match to any of Greengrass’s contemporary thrillers, at a time when the imbalance of rich and poor has never felt more resonant.
