UKJFF Special Screening: Protektor

2009/ Czech Republic & Germany/ 98 mins/Dir. Marek Najbrt

In this stylish and intriguing drama set in German-occupied Prague in the late 1930s, a young socialite couple realise that their ‘jet-set’ lifestyle is coming to an abrupt end…

The lead actor Jana Plodkova will attend the screening, which will be followed by a Q&A.

As the situation for Czech Jews worsens and Hana, the Jewish wife and actress, is no longer safe, her husband, Emil, a well known radio broadcaster, agrees to collaborate with the occupiers in order to protect the woman he adores. When Emil becomes the official voice of Nazi propaganda, the couple enter a dark and dangerous labyrinth from which there may be no way out. Director Najbrt elegantly marries classic film noir and contemporary style in a fresh, cool and somewhat provocative take on the role of artists and intellectuals caught up in the Nazi web.
