Wicker

A hard man is good to find in this raucous magical realist parable featuring Olivia Colman and Alexander Skarsgård. Colman plays Fisherwoman, noted oddball and source of pungent smells. Tired of insults about her single status, she requests a husband from the village basket weaver (Peter Dinklage). Step forward her man made of wicker (Skarsgård) who causes a major stir locally, especially with the local trad wife (Elizabeth Debicki) and her coterie.

While the premise here is outlandish, it’s far from creaky. There’s a deep feminist parable here, as well as genuine relationship that echoes other fantastical pairings, from Frankenstein to The Shape of Water. The performances and world-building are the cherry on top to this indie delight that’ll weave a spell.
