As part of his sold-out season of In Conversation events, Jim Carter returns to Kiln Cinema for a very special fundraiser, the screening of the 2014 highly acclaimed film Pride followed by a Q&A with writer Stephen Beresford, director Matthew Warchus and nine members of the star-studded cast: Paddy Considine, Freddie Fox, Jess Gunning, George MacKay, Bill Nighy, Andrew Scott, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West and Liz White.*
It’s the summer of 1984 Margaret Thatcher is in power and the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is on strike. At the Gay Pride March in London, a group of gay and lesbian activists decides to raise money to support the families of the striking miners with surprising results.

Jim Carter
Jim Carter
Jim Carter is one of the UK’s most recognizable actors, with a career that spans stage, film and television.
From 2010-15 he played butler Charles Carson in the multi-award-winning ITV series Downton Abbey, a role for which he has received worldwide renown. He recently reprised the part in the film continuation of the series.
His career has spanned numerous performances at the National Theatre and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His recent television credits include the Earl of Kent in the broadcast of Richard Eyre’s King Lear and Captain Brown in the BBC series Cranford. His recent film credits include Swimming With Men, Transformers: The Last Night and The Good Liar.
Stephen Beresford
Stephen Beresford
Stephen Beresford is an actor and writer. He won the British Academy Film Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for Pride with David Livingstone, producer, in 2014.
He is best known for writing The Last of the Haussmans, which was produced by the National Theatre in 2012. He also won the Queer Palm award at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival.
He also wrote Fanny and Alexander at the Old Vic and directed Twelfth Night at the Albery Theatre in London.
Paddy Considine
Paddy Considine
Paddy Considine is an actor, director, screenwriter and musician. He has received an Empire Award, an Evening Standard British Film Award and a Thessaloniki Film Festival Award for his acting.
He is known for his roles in films A Room for Romeo Brass, Last Resort, My Summer of Love and In America. He played Richard in Dead Man’s Shoes, which he co-wrote with Shane Meadows. He also co-starred with Russell Crowe and Renée Zellweger in Cinderella Man.
Considine won a BAFTA Award for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer for his feature-length directing debut Tyrannosaur.
Freddie Fox
Freddie Fox
In the theatre Freddie played Bosie in The Judas Kiss and Romeo in Romeo and Juliet, for which he won third prize at the Ian Charleson Awards. He also appeared in Travesties and An Ideal Husband in the West End.
TV credits include lead parts in Edwin Drood, Cucumber and Banana and as the singer Marilyn in the Boy George biopic Worried About The Boy. Film credits include The Riot Club.
George MacKay
George MacKay
George MacKay’s first film appearance was in Peter Pan in 2003 when he was cast as one of the Lost Boys. Since then he appeared in A Guide to Second Date Sex, True History of the Kelly Gang and Pride in 2014. George played Mick in The Caretaker at the Old Vic directed by Matthew Warchus and plays a lead role in the new film 1917 directed by Sam Mendes.
George was nominated for the BAFTA Rising Star Award and he received a Trophee Chopard for Male Revelation of the year in 2017.
Jessica Gunning
Jessica Gunning
Jessica Gunning began her stage career at the National with productions including Much Ado About Nothing and Major Barbara. She has also starred in When We Have Sufficiently Tortured Each Other at the National.
Among Jessica’s many TV appearances are Law and Order UK, White Heat, What Remains and That Day We Sang with Imelda Staunton.
Bill Nighy
Bill Nighy
Bill Nighy has worked in theatre and television since 1981 and is widely known for his performance as Billy Mack in Love Actually and his portrayal of Davy Jones in Pirates of the Caribbean. He also played Cliff in Pride in 2014.
He has appeared in numerous theatre productions including Skylight by David Hare at Wyndham’s Theatre in 2014, which later transferred to Broadway in 2015. He has also starred in The Seagull and King Lear at the National.
He has won several awards including the Annie Award for Voice Acting in a Feature Production for Arthur Christmas, Satellite Award for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for Gideon’s Daughter and a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in State of Play.
Andrew Scott
Andrew Scott
Andrew Scott is a highly successful theatre, film and television actor. He has won several awards including Gold Derby Television Award for Best Comedy Supporting Actor in Fleabag, the British Independent Film Award for Best Supporting Actor in Pride and BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor in Sherlock.
His stage work includes Present Laughter, The Sea Wall and Design for Living at The Old Vic. He has also starred in Hamlet at the Harold Pinter Theatre, as well as starring in several productions for the National Theatre including Emperor and Galilean and Aristocrats.
He is also very well known for playing Moriarty in Sherlock and The Priest in critically-acclaimed Fleabag.
Imelda Staunton
Imelda Staunton
Imelda Staunton is one of the most highly respected actresses internationally, with a career in stage, film and television.
Her work on stage includes leading roles in Follies, Sweeney Todd, Gypsy and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, receiving four Olivier Awards and numerous nominations.
Her appearances in film range from the titular role in Mike Leigh’s Vera Drake – for which she won a BAFTA Award and was nominated for an Academy Award – to Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter series, Mrs. Blatherwick in Nanny McPhee and Hefina Headon in Pride.
Matthew Warchus
Matthew Warchus
Matthew Warchus directed Pride in 2014, for which he won a BAFTA and Golden Globe Nomination for Best British Independent Film.
Warchus is a theatre, opera and film director. He has directed award-winning productions for all the major British theatre companies, including a debut with the RSC as the youngest director for the Stratford main stage. He is the current artistic director of The Old Vic.
His stage work includes Present Laughter, A Christmas Carol, Groundhog Day – The Musical and Matilda. He has directed numerous musicals, has won 4 Tony Awards and been nominated for 12. He’s also won Best New Musical and Best Director at the Olivier Awards in 2012 for Matilda.
Dominic West
Dominic West
Dominic West is an actor, director, producer and musician. He is best known for playing Jimmy McNulty in The Wire and Noah Solloway in The Affair, for which he earned a Golden Globe nomination. Dominic was awarded a BAFTA for his performance in Appropriate Adult.
He starred in Punisher : War Zone and appeared in Brassic, The Hour and as Jean Valjean in BBC’s Les Misérables. In 2013 he trekked to the South Pole for charity.
Liz White
Liz White
Liz White is an actress best known for her role in BBC TV series Life on Mars.
For theatre, she played Masha in Dying for It by Moira Buffini at the Almeida and she played Gabriela in References to Salvador Dali Make Me Hot at the Arcola. For the National Theatre she appeared in Spring Storm and A Woman Killed with Kindness and for the Old Vic she appeared in Electra.
She has had various television and film roles including Call the Midwife, Line of Duty and New Tricks. She also appeared in Pride in 2014.
