Alanis is a sex worker in Buenos Aires. She lives and works in a room in the city centre with her baby and her friend Gisela, a colleague several years older than her. Pretending to be clients, two municipal inspectors shut down their workplace and arrest Gisela, accusing her of ‘human trafficking’. Let down by everybody, Alanis heads to her aunt’s place, a fashion store facing Plaza Miserere. In this violent neighborhood, Alanis tries to regain her dignity, help her friend and take care of her son. She offers her services on the street, but the street has its rules, and Alanis must fight for her place.

This screening will be followed by a discussion of the film and an audience Q&A. The event forms part of the project ‘Affective and Immaterial Labour in Latinx American culture’, which is funded by an Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Research Development and Engagement Fellowship.
