We are delighted to be joined by Peanut Butter & Blueberries writer Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan for an introductory conversation about depictions of northern England’s Pakistani Muslim diaspora on stage and screen before our screening of Ali & Ava.
‘Clio Barnard’s refreshingly grounded, social realist riff on the classic romcom is one of her finest works to date.’ Little White Lies
Set in Bradford, Ali & Ava sees a widowed teaching assistant (Claire Rushbrook, Secrets and Lies) falling in love with a landlord (Adeel Akhtar, Four Lions) adrift in his life, in a modest, timeless story that transcends class and culture. Helmed by Clio Barnard (The Selfish Giant, The Arbor), who builds fiction out of documentary-style research with real-life characters, Ali & Ava is a sweet, refreshing and unflinching look at working-class romance in Britain today, boasting a sensational soundtrack and an evocation of the North that’s as cinematic as it is truthful.
