It is 1613, and William Shakespeare (Kenneth Branagh) is widely acknowledged as the greatest writer alive. But when the Globe Theatre burns down during a production of Henry VIII, he decides to return to his home in Stratford-upon-Avon to embrace retirement.

Reunited with his wife Anne (Judi Dench) and his neglected daughters, Shakespeare finds himself haunted by the death of his young son Hamnet seventeen years previously. As he attempts to mend his fractured family, he is forced to come to terms with his own failings as a husband and father.
