Adapting Judy Blume’s beloved teen novel, this ‘70s set drama still has much to say on friends, feelings and adolescence for modern girls, teens, men and women. 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson) is torn from her New York life for a new start in the suburbs of New Jersey. An outsider who is going through changes where friends would be a lifeline, she is also navigating the faultlines in her parents’ (Rachel McAdams and Benny Safdie) marriage and her meddling grandmother (Kathy Bates).

Director Kelly Fremon Craig works her magic with young actors and teen stories once again, having made a star of Hailee Steinfeld in The Edge of Seventeen. Despite the fifty years that have passed since its publication, this is still a refreshingly frank and honest depiction of the passage into adolescence that never falls into euphemism or patronising its audience.
