Keith Jarrett’s Köln Concert is an iconic recording, one of the landmarks of improvised jazz. But getting the maestro to the piano was a kind of chaotic miracle, as captured in this pleasingly madcap run through the streets of mid-‘70s Cologne.
Vera Brandes (Mala Emde) is an 18-year-old upstart who has turned the German city into an unlikely jazz Mecca. We follow her as she tries to deliver the concert against all conceivable odds: broken pianos, missing performers and a whale-sized debt. This infectious, light caper is a treat for fans of jazz, and might just win over those who don’t yet have that swing.
