★★★★ The Guardian
Banned from filmmaking by the Iranian state, Jafar Panahi nevertheless manages to create life-changing cinema. No Bears bears comparison with his finest work, demonstrating his joyful, humane and playful viewpoint, even in life’s hardest circumstances.
Like Taxi Tehran, this film plays with day-to-day life in Tehran, while also playing absurd games with the nature of filmmaking, especially when making film itself is a crime. The film begins with a story of lovers trying to escape Iran until our director intervenes. Cut to Panahi himself directing the film remotely. What follows is a tragicomic shaggy dog story of trying to tell a story by any means necessary.
