The Hate U Give

A timely and passionate film about race relations in America, based on the acclaimed novel by Angie Thomas. Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) is an average teenage girl, her life uneasily divided between her affluent, mostly-white school and her poorer, mostly-black neighbourhood. One day, out driving with childhood friend Khalil, the pair are pulled over by police. Mistaking a hairbrush for a handgun, the officer shoots Khalil dead.

As Starr comes to terms with the death of her friend, her two worlds crash together, and she finds herself in the midst of a national movement. With all eyes on her, the consequences of her activism prove both dangerous and empowering.
