The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

  • 108m
  • Cast includes Jim Broadbent, Penelope Wilton
  • Directed by Hettie McDonald
  • Cert 12A

British acting royalty Jim Broadbent and Penelope Wilton star in this adaptation of the bestselling novel by Rachel Joyce. Harold (Broadbent) is adrift in retirement in Devon when he receives a letter from his old friend Queenie, announcing she is in hospice care in Berwick-on-Tweed. On the verge of posting his letter of condolence, he instead decides to hand deliver it, covering the five hundred miles on foot. On his way, he will discover a new hope and humanity on the streets, forests and streams of England, as his quest inspires the nation.

Jim Broadbent (Another Year, The Duke) and Penelope Wilton (Shaun of the Dead, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) are superb in this pleasingly soft-hearted film that is a stunning showcase for the British countryside and the spirit of our nation. Shot in sequence and on location from Devon to Berwick by director Hettie McDonald (Normal People, Beautiful Thing), this is a fitting adaptation to a beloved modern novel.
